Cold flue syndrome is the third possibility, particularly relevant in NB camps that sit unheated between uses. A cold masonry chimney or an exterior-run single-wall stovepipe can have a column of cold, dense air sitting in it that resists the warm draft trying to establish. This is why your stove might smoke badly when you first light it but settle down after 20-30 minutes — once the flue warms up, draft improves. An exterior chimney (running up the outside wall rather than through the interior) is especially prone to this in our climate, where overnight temps can drop to -25°C or colder inland.
Practical fixes to consider, roughly in order of cost:

- If the chimney runs on an exterior wall, consider insulating the chase or switching to an insulated double-wall or triple-wall flue system to retain heat between fires.
